Malaria is among the most deadly diseases in the world, it kills millions of people each year and over half of the world’s population is at risk of catching the disease. There is lots of information available about malaria in the public domain but here are five of the most shocking and surprising facts about malaria that you probably haven’t heard of before.

1. At least eight presidents have suffered from Malaria.

George Washington was once infected with malaria along with other high profile world leaders such as Pope Sixtus and Pope Leo.

2. It can take as much as four years to show malaria symptoms.

Some types of malaria remain dormant. This means it can take even years for the first symptoms to show.

3. Drinking Beer may be increasing your chance of malaria infection.

According to scientists at the University Of Emory, mosquitoes are naturally drawn to the smell of beer, meaning that drinking a few cans of beer produces an aroma which is irresistible to malaria carrying mosquitoes. So when you’re on holiday somewhere tropical, try and stay clear of the beer!

4. Thousands Die from taking ‘fake’ antimalarial drugs

The World Health Organisation estimates that around 20% of malaria deaths can be put down to counterfeit drugs claiming to treat and prevent malaria.

5. Half of the world’s population is at risk of getting malaria.

Around 3.2 Billion people are currently at risk of contracting malaria.
