Hi, you’re listening to Malaria Stories with Annemarie Quinn and Code Sangala on Fight Malaria.

This week we meet Osman, a three-year-old boy from Kachere, Blantyre, who was admitted June 2018 with 4 + and cerebral malaria.

Osman had been unconscious for a day. Osman had a vein burst and doctors found malaria parasites manifesting in his eyes.

Osman went through two MRI scans. We met him on his 1 year follow up at Queens Research ward undertaking his cognitive test. The results indicated that he was struggling with numbers and his fine motor skills, but we were happy to learn that he had regained his sight.

Patients who do not respond well are referred to a neurologist, occupational therapist and, if hearing is critically impaired, an audiologist.

Malaria can cause long term complications with speech, hearing and behaviour.

Thanks for listening and tune in next week!
